A Hafiz Poem for Teta

When I was reading this poem, I could almost feel my teta wrapping her arms around me. The sound of her slippers swishing across the tile floors in her house as she sneakily turned off our fan in the middle of summer brought a tear to my eye. She will always be there to watch over me, even if I cannot hear her footsteps anymore.

Keeping Watch
In the morning
When I began to wake,
It happened again--

That feeling
That You, Beloved,
Had stood over me all night
Keeping watch,

That feeling
That as soon as I began to stir

You put Your lips on my forehead
And lit a Holy Lamp
Inside my heart.

Thank you, Hafiz for bringing my beloved back to me for a moment in time!
